Business strike Seated quarter production ratcheted up slightly in 1890 to a total of 80,000 pieces. The Mint's output of proofs, however, amounted to only 590 pieces--the lowest yearly total since 1877. All specimen strikings of the 1890 quarter were achieved with a single pair of dies. The present survivor easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. It is a bright, sharply contrasted representative with an appearance that is untoned save for a light overlay of delicate golden iridescence on the reverse. Heavily frosted, the devices are also possessed of full striking definition. A tiny break in the frost over the horizontal lines in the reverse shield should serve as a useful pedigree marker.
