1890 $20 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Ex: BRS Legacy Collection. Few double eagles were coined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1890, regardless of the format. Just 75,940 business strikes were produced, along with an additional 55 proofs. This total mintage, less than 76,000 coins, was smaller than the Carson City production of double eagles, and less than 10% of the San Francisco mintage.
Less than half of the 55 proof examples survive today, with a total population certainly under 20 pieces. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth wrote in their Gold Encyclopedia: "There are just 15 or so coins known for the date in proof, including examples in museum collections that are permanently off the market." Few of those can match the quality of the present piece. PCGS has only certified five proofs of this date, with PR65 the finest, and none of the five have been assigned a Cameo or Deep Cameo designation. NGC has certified quite a few more, including one PR66 Ultra Cameo and one PR67 Ultra Cameo among the nine proof examples they have handled.
The Gem is an amazing piece with deep yellow-gold color and impressive aesthetic appeal. The devices on both sides are heavily frosted with hardly a blemish to be found, although the cheek has a small copper toning spot below the eye. The fields have impressive deep mirrors with only a few faint hairlines that prevent an even higher grade. Census: 1 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 2 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)

Important notice:</
