1890 $2 1/2 MS66 NGC. Low mintage quarter eagles from the 1880s and 1890s combine both scarcity and collectibility, and it is surprising that relatively few numismatists collect this subset. Despite a tiny mintage of 8,720 pieces, the 1890 is obtainable and affordable in Mint State. Of course, the present flashy Premium Gem is much better than the usual 1890, since the semi-prooflike fields are nearly immaculate. The strike is also exquisite, and only a single shiny spot on the neck prevents an even finer grade. Attractive brass-gold color adorns both sides. Virtually unimprovable quality for this scarcer date. The die scratch in the mid-right side of the shield is present on some, if not all, examples (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006). Census: 7 in 66, 1 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
