1890 1st Ed. In Darkest Africa By H. M. Stanley
Featured in this lot is this leather bound, 1890 first edition, illustrated copy of Volume I & II of “In Darkest Africa” by Henry M. Stanley. “In Darkest Africa”, or “The Quest, Resue, and Retreat of Emin Governor of Equatoria”, by Henry M. Stanley is Stanley's own account of his last adventure on the African continent. At the turn of that century, the interior of the African continent was largely unknown to the American and European public. With the accounts of great explorers like Stanley, in 1888, Stanley led an expedition to come to the aid of Mehmed Emin Pasha. The two volumes that compose “In Darkest Africa”, or “The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria”, are his account of what happened. The books show two steel engravings and 150 illustrations and maps (point of interest: it is very rare to have the maps complete in both volumes, which this collection includes). The books show gilt lettering to the leather spine of the book and a multicolor decoration to the leather wrapped cover. The condition of this pair of books is fair, with wear consistent with the age of the books, some foxing to the pages of the book, and some wear to the leather binding. Other than the cover board, the binding feels tight. The measurements of these books are 9" x 6 1/4". All three maps are present.
