This was because, at the time of minting, nearly all '89-S dollars went into storage, mostly at the San Francisco Mint. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, several bags were released onto the market. More were made available in the 1950s, and the 1976 Redfield hoard was said to contain several thousand coins of this issue. This date is now readily available through the MS64 grade level. Gem specimens, of which about 750 have been certified, become somewhat more difficult. Relatively few MS66 examples have been graded (less than 90 coins), and a mere one piece finer. This Premium Gem displays radiant luster, and just a wisp or two of barely discernible light tan color. The design elements are well impressed, save for weakness in the hair over Liberty's ear. A few minor luster grazes are noted on the obverse, and a light toning spot is visible in the lower right (facing) reverse quadrant. Population: 59 in 66, 1 finer (2/06).
