1889-S $20 MS64 PCGS
1889-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Two quotes explain the rarity and ultimate high price this piece will fetch at auction. The first is from Doug Winter's book:
"A few small hoards of 1889-S Double Eagles have entered the market from overseas sources. Nearly all of the coins from these groups were heavily bagmarked and graded between About Uncirculated-58 and Mint State-62."
The second quote is from Bowers' book on double eagles:
"The formula for San Francisco Mint double eagles of the 1880s holds true for this, the concluding year: examples are readily available in circulated grades and in Mint State from 60 to 62. Any higher grade coin is rare, curiously so." (Emphasis ours).
The MS64 grade level is the finest the 1889-S twenty can be found in. And at that level, only 12 coins have been so graded by both services. This is an exceptionally attractive example whose eye appeal carries it beyond the technical grade assigned by PCGS. The fields are bright with a glint of semi-reflectivity, and each side has subtle shadings of rose and lilac patina. Fully struck with no mentionable abrasions. Population: 8 in 64, 0 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
