1889-S $1 MS66 PCGS
1889-S $1 MS66 PCGS. The 1889-S was once considered one of the rarest of all Morgan dollars. At the time of minting, nearly all '89-S dollars went into storage, mostly at the San Francisco Mint. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, several bags were released onto the market. More were made available in the 1950s, and the 1976 Redfield hoard was said to contain several thousand coins of this issue. The '89-S is now readily available at grade levels up to and including MS65. Relatively few MS66 examples have been graded (about 80 coins), however, and a mere one piece finer. This Premium Gem displays radiant luster, and just a wisp or two of amber and blue toning on the reverse. A dark spot is noted above the 9 in the date, and a handful more reside on the upper right quadrant of the reverse. The design elements are well impressed, save for weakness in the hair over Liberty's ear. A few minor luster grazes prohibit a higher grade. Population: 60 in 66, 1 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: George T.
