<B>1889 G$1 PR65 PCGS.</B></I> A glorious Gem proof gold dollar, this piece is housed in a old PCGS holder from the late 1980s. Both sides have brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with mirrored fields and lustrous devices. This piece was certified before PCGS began using the Cameo and Deep Cameo designations, and probably should be sent back for a review. We believe that the result would be a Cameo designation for this Gem. The proof mintage for gold dollars reached an all-time high in 1889 when the Mint coined 1,779 such pieces, although many of these were probably melted in the next few years after remaining unsold. A hallmark of the proof example is the date that slants down to the right.
