1889 G$1 MS66 NGC. Despite the relatively low 28,950-piece business strike mintage, 1889 gold dollars are readily found in any grade. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) point out that small hoards have turned up with regularity over the years. They also suggest that the date's high survival rate is probably due to its status as the last year of the type and the end of gold dollars in general. Considering the high availability of the issue, it is certainly noteworthy that the Premium Gem example offered in the present lot is the only 1889 gold dollar given the coveted Star designation (NGC has seen more than 2,000 near-Gem and finer 1889 specimens). Outstanding luster enlivens both sides, each of which displays rich reddish-gold, orange, and mint-green coloration on frosty surfaces. A powerful strike emboldens all of the design features, including virtually full delineation on the intricacies of the reverse wreath. An inoffensive handling mark or two precludes an even higher grade. The coin's overall eye appeal is breathtaking!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
