1889-CC<S$1> MS65 PCGS. We recently sold selections from the Jack Lee Collection, consisting of coins from his third collection of dollars. This example is from his first collection, dispersed several years ago. It was also part of the PCGS Silver Dollar Tour. The grading service contacted several prominent collectors of high-quality Morgan Silver Dollars and assembled the best possible collection of these coins. This collection was displayed at coin shows during the 1990's. All of those coins, like this example, were given special PCGS labels identifying them as coins that were part of the traveling exhibition.
Rumors continue to circulate regarding possible hoards of 1889-CC Morgan Dollars in Mint State grades. Even if one or more 1,000 coin bags still exist, which is unlikely, the possibility that such bags would yield even a single Gem Mint State example is equally unlikely. Apparently one or two bags of these coins came to light in Montana in the 1950s or early 1960s, these bags including a number of heavily marked or slightly circulated examples. In addition, between 1,000 and 3,000 coins were included in the Treasury Vaults as of 1964. Such was an extremely small quantity, given the tens and hundreds of thousand examples of some dates. After payouts discontinued in 1964, exactly one 1889-CC Morgan Dollar remained, and it was included as part of the GSA distribution in the 1970s, apparently still residing in the plastic case from that offering.
The example offered here is a remarkable Gem Mint State coin with fully brilliant and frosty devices, surrounded by satiny silver fields, with excellent contrast. The rims on each side have extremely faint gold toning. The obverse of this dollar is nearly perfect with only the slightest chatter in the fields. The reverse has a couple field scrapes, one by the left wing, and the other near the eagle's beak. We believe this would have received an even higher Premium Gem grade if it weren't for these few small blemishes.
Ex: Jack Lee and the PCGS Tour.
