<B>1889-CC S$1 MS64 Prooflike NGC.</B></I> After a small production of 28,000 pieces in August 1885, production of Morgan dollars ceased until October 1889, more than four years later. While the coins of August 1885, like the others of that issue, were almost all stored and later released to the public through the Treasury and the GSA, the 350,000 examples of the 1889-CC faced heavy circulation. What Q. David Bowers wrote in his <I>The Official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars: A Complete History and Price Guide</B></I> about the 1889-CC is especially true today: "The 1889-CC dollar is one of the great keys in the Morgan series, and among Carson City issues it is far and away the most elusive. In comparison to the demand for them, examples are rare in all grades."<BR> Finding a pleasing example of this issue is difficult enough, and acquiring an attractive Prooflike piece proves even more troublesome. A look at the NGC <I>Census</B></I> reveals only 115 Prooflike dollars, and of those, 34 are in various About Uncirculated grades. A collector who insists upon exceptional eye appeal could take years to find a suitable coin.<BR> The emphasis is on <I>could,</B></I> because such a piece is offered here. The devices are boldly impressed and have generous frost, and the moderately reflective fields shine beneath thin, intermittent haze. A single spot of chalk-white patina appears above the 18 in the date. Despite a number of small marks in the fields, the overall appearance is clean for the grade, and only a few light grazes on Liberty's cheek keep this dollar from Gem status. This is a grand opportunity to own a well-preserved and immensely appealing example of this popular and important issue.
