1889-CC<S$1> MS64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. For the collector seeking a high quality example of this date, the present sale provides a remarkable opportunity, with an MS64 PL, this MS64 DMPL, and an MS65. It is unusual to have even a single Choice or Gem Mint State example of this issue in a sale. The opportunity to bid on multiple Mint State coins is rare, indeed.
The Carson City Mint, which had been idle since its last production of 1885, began operations during 1889, only to close down again in 1893, after which, the presses never operated again for United States coinage. Silver Dollar production during 1889 was from at least three different combinations of obverse and reverse dies out of ten obverse and seven reverse dies prepared for this coinage. Production of these dollars began in October 1889, with 100,000 coins each in October and November, and 150,000 in December.
This is a sensational example with sharply defined design definition on both sides, unlike many. The surfaces are deeply mirrored around frosty and lustrous devices. It is a remarkable cameo appearance that really sets this coin apart. Both sides have a trace of gold color at the borders, while the balance is fully brilliant silvery-white. A few tiny abrasions keep this from the Gem category.
