1889-CC S$1 MS64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Choice and appealing, one of just 350,000 pieces produced at the Carson City Mint between October and December 1889. Van Allen and Mallis, in their Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace Dollars, Fourth Edition, comment that the circumstances of production for the 1889-CC Morgan dollars precluded excessive wear and tear on the dies. Combined with a low production, it is little surprise that, in their words, "A significant percentage of the issue are proof-likes and most have good contrast." Such pieces are still elusive in an absolute sense, however, and the prized earliest strikes, the Deep Mirror Prooflikes, are as difficult to find as for many other issues. When a near-Gem level of preservation, this key date, and the exceptional reflectivity of Deep Mirror Prooflike surfaces converge, the resulting coin attracts plenty of attention.
The shining fields are reflective at arm's length, and the exactingly struck cream-colored devices have generous amounts of frost. Hardly any haze affects the fields, and the effect approaches black-and-white. A number of small, scattered marks appear in the fields, magnified somewhat by the reflective mirrors, though these are less distracting than one might think. A minor abrasion affects the cheek, and a scrape is noted to the left of the eagle's beak. These flaws hardly hinder the overall eye appeal of this remarkable piece, which is seemingly destined to become a cornerstone of one of the finest collections of Morgan dollars. Population: 16 in 64 Deep Mirror Prooflike, with none finer at either NGC or PCGS (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
