1889-CC<S$1> MS63 Prooflike NGC. A scarce date in all mint state grades, particularly so with the desirable Prooflike fields. The present coin is snow-white and shows no hint of toning on the obverse or reverse. Well struck by the dies with most of the curls showing separation over Liberty's ear as well as the feathers on the eagle's breast. Most of the original mintage of 350,000 pieces soon found their way to the melting pots under the Pittman Act of 1918, leaving few coins for collectors to choose from. Of those that do remain, feverish attention is generated a particularly nice coin crosses the auction block. Although available for a price in Mint State, the number of collectors desiring an example far exceeds the limited supply. Examination will find an complex scrape on the obverse which grazes Liberty's uppermost curls over her forehead, continues into the field and onto the lower portion of her nose. Further identification is found in the form of a minute planchet flake which touches the upper left serif of the D in DOLLAR and extends to the left from that point. Liberty's broad cheek and neck are otherwise quite attractive for the grade, and this coin has fewer nicks and marks than one would expect, especially so for a coin with the delicate Prooflike fields. Census: 37 in 63, 5 finer (11/05).
