1889-CC<S$1> MS63 NGC. This coin is very bright and lustrous with no signs of toning present on the obverse and just a couple of microscopic gold flecks tucked into the feathers of the left wing of the eagle. The fields are slightly reflective, particularly so on the reverse. Liberty's cheek and neck are free of all but minor scuffs, while the surrounding fields have a scattering of nicks which nudged this coin out of the Choice MS64 category. Although a number of these were recovered in the Treasury Hoards released in 1964, the number was limited to perhaps a single bag, virtually all of the coins in that bag show extensive bagmarks. A review of the Population Reports will confirm that in grades as high as MS63 this is a very scarce coin, in grades of MS64 or higher, the numbers quickly dwindle. This is truly one of the scarcest dates in the entire series and a very challenging coin to obtain in any mint state grade. For the collector who can afford this grade level, the coin offered should be quite satisfactory.
The Carson City Mint reopened after a four year hiatus while Grover Cleveland was in office, and coinage resumed quickly. This brief flurry of activity was brought to a more permanent halt four years later when Cleveland returned to the Presidency in 1893, killing off the Carson City once and for all. Collectors have long coveted these popular and elusive Carson City coins, which have ample romance and allure as coming from this small Wild West mining town. An opportunity for the advanced specialist to finally cross this rarity off their want list. Population: 45 in 63, 41 finer (9/05).
