1889-CC S$1 MS61 NGC. The '89-CC Morgan dollar is immediately recognized as one of the important dates in this series. The original mintage was a modest 350,000 coins, the third smallest mintage in the Carson City series of Morgan dollars, but mintage is not the whole story. More important is the number of survivors. Consider the 1885-CC Morgan dollar with a mintage of just 228,000 coins. Many or most of that issue went into storage, eventually being released nearly a century later in the 1970s. Many bags of that date were sold directly to collectors and were preserved. Alternatively, most of the mintage of the 1889-CC entered circulation, thus almost all of the survivors are well worn. This example is an impressive exception to that rule. Both sides have natural golden-brown toning, suggesting that it has remained hidden away for nearly its entire life. While some light abrasions are evident, the surfaces are fully lustrous beneath the toning. This impressive Mint State piece will certainly be a highlight of the active Morgan dollar collector's holdings.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
