1889-CC<S$1> MS61 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Although reopened on July 1, 1889 after a four-year closure, the Carson City Mint did not resume Morgan Dollar production until October of that year. With so little time remaining before the end of the calendar year, it is little wonder that the mintage of the 1889-CC amounted to just 350,000 pieces. A decent percentage of this total was placed into circulation at the time of issue with the result that, when offered at all, this key date is likely to be worn to one degree or another. Some Uncirculated coins, however, did emerge from federal holdings from the 1920s through the 1950s, most in the West. These pieces have long been absorbed by the market and, today, the '89-CC is rare at all levels of Mint State preservation.
The deeply mirrored fields on this specimen present a noticeable contrast with the mildly frosted devices, and faintly dappled milky-gray color visits localized areas over each side. The design elements are sharply struck, although a touch of minor softness is noted on the hair above Liberty's ear. Some luster grazes and scuffs are present on both sides. It is possible that this coin is somewhat conservatively graded.
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection.
