1889-CC$1> AU50 PCGS. After a three year intermission since the coinage of 1885, the Carson City Mint renewed production in 1889 with coinage limited to silver dollars and double eagles. Only 350,000 Morgan dollars and 30,945 double eagles were coined in that year for a total production of just under $1 million face value. The mintage comparison is interesting as the Morgan dollar had ten times the coinage of the double eagle, yet it is considered a key-date among Carson City Morgan dollars while the double eagle is only considered to be a scarce issue relative to other Carson City double eagles. This example is a splendid representative with light silver-gray surfaces, traces of peripheral gold toning, and considerable remaining luster.
