1889-CC $1 PCGS MS64 [L#1292
While roughly half of the survivors of this key date show prooflike tendencies in the fields, this lovely MS64 shines with a creamy white glow with near-immaculately preserved surfaces. The '89-CC is always included among the top five rarities in the series in Mint State condition, and it is the undisputed key among Uncirculated Carson City Morgan Dollars. This important Choice representative is unaffected by toning, has a lovely sheen in the fields and is brilliant.

Silver Dollar coinage recommenced in 1889 at the Carson City office after a three-year recess. Evidently a few irregularities had popped up which caused the Treasury Department to close the Mint while an investigation was made. Also, the Democrat Grover Cleveland presidency decided to tighten the budget, refusing funding for any agencies Cleveland deemed superfluous. He had his eye on the mint at Carson, and that is why this mint closed from 1886-1888 and again after 1893. Upon reopening in 1889, there was only time enough to strike a few Silver Dollars before the new calendar year began. Hence, this date's infrequent appearance at auction, especially in higher grade.
