Apparently, very few coins were released into circulation at the time of issue, unknown quantities of 1889-CC silver dollars were stored at the San Francisco Mint and as part of Federal Reserve holdings in the West. These stores yielded a few (possibly no more than five) bags of 1889-CC dollars in the 1950s-1960s. Even when combined with the handful of rolls and single coins that emerged from the Treasury Department in Washington, these bags were woefully inadequate for the task of supplying every Morgan dollar collector with a high quality example. Bowers <I>(Encyclopedia)</B></I> does not mention the Pittman Act as a source of attrition for this issue, but it seems likely that numerous 1889-CC Morgan dollars must have been shipped east to Washington and subsequently melted sometime during World War I.<BR>The 1889-CC is the rarest Carson City Morgan dollar in all grades. This issue is also unique among Morgan dollars in that its Mint State population is equally divided between satiny and prooflike examples. Nonetheless, the majority of Deep Mirror Prooflike coins grade no higher than MS 63, and neither NGC nor PCGS have thus far certified a single coin at the MS 65 Deep Mirror Prooflike level. Both sides of this coin are untoned with appreciable cameo contrast. There are a few abrasions in the obverse field, but the surfaces are far better preserved than those of most '89-CC dollars. Sharply struck throughout, this is a coin that begs for inclusion in the finest silver dollar collection. Population: 13 in 64, 0 finer (4/03). </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/18/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$42,550.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/05/2001</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$60,950.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/11/2003</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$26,450.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>11/17/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$31,050.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/21/1998</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$30,475.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/01/2003</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$50,600.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
