1889-CC $1 MS63 PCGS
1889-CC $1 MS63 PCGS. The 1889-CC dollar is a challenging coin in any grade, perhaps more so than its 350,000-piece mintage would seem to indicate. Paul Green, in an August 1, 2006 Numismatic News article entitled "Top Dollar Paid for 1889-CC Morgan Dollar," attempts to explain the issue's elusiveness:

"Something out of the ordinary had to have taken place or the 1889-CC would not be as tough as it is. It is possible that many were melted due to the 1918 Pittman Act. With 270 million silver dollars destroyed, some numbers of any date were likely destroyed, although Carson City dollars in general were not heavily destroyed--more than 50 percent of some dates were still found in the Treasury vaults in the 1960s. Another conclusion is that back around 1890, the 1889-CC was paid out in larger numbers than was usually the case. There is some indication of that, as the supply of the 1889-CC in circulated grades is better than we might expect for a date with its reputation. In VG-8, the 1889-CC is $625, while a VF-20 is $1,600. The prices are not low, but this is a tough date and in a grade like VF-20, there are some coins on the market."

The current lot contains a wonderful '89-CC in Select condition. Pleasing luster issues from satiny surfaces that are visited by occasional splashes of orange-gold color at the peripheries, and a well executed strike translates into excellent definition on the design elements, including nice detail in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the eagle's breast feathers. A few minute marks are noted, but they are not of the severity often seen on MS63 coins. A couple of small marks beneath the second U of PLURIBUS might help to identify this particular example. Truly a great coin for the grade level! Population: 67 in 63, 29 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: George T.
