1889-CC $1 AU58 NGC. As with other Carson City key issues, the 1889-CC is more prevalent in moderately worn condition than in gleaming Mint State. Despite numerous rumors to the contrary, the number of 1889-CC pieces awarded such a grade by NGC or PCGS dispels the idea that the issue was ever known in bag quantities. Bowers (2004) described himself as having been offered a bag of the coins, though his writings reflected gradual disbelief: "After a while one tends to be a skeptic."
Though not in Mint State, this AU58 example shares many of the same traits as its finer cousins. The devices show uncommonly strong detail for the issue, and the pleasingly lustrous fields exhibit delicate cream-gold patina. A touch of highpoint friction and small, scattered flaws are present on each side, but the overall appearance is excellent, and it is possible that the coin traded as Mint State prior to its encapsulation. A carefully preserved and comparatively affordable piece.

Coin Engraver: George T.
