This important 19th century treatise was printed by J. D. Young, Sacramento, California. Informative work contains a detailed report of the California Viticultural Commissioners, along with various appendices. This rare Volume numbers 276 pages with numerous illustrations and measures 9" tall x 6" wide x .5" thick. It is bound in original publisher's wraps, the front cover is present yet detached and worn, back cover is lacking, a few unobtrusive institutional markings, and it is generally quite clean internally. All in all, this desirable treatise remains very presentable.

Original 19th century annual reports of the California Viticultural Commissioners are scarce, and are considered an important early source for the California wine and grape growing industries. Created in 1880 by the state legislature, the California Board of Viticulture monitored the health of the state's wine and grape growing industries, and promoted their growth. The state was divided into seven viticultural districts, each of which had a representative on the board, besides two additional commissioners representing the state at large. Acting through its commissioners, the board greatly enhanced the profitability and commercial viability of California's wine and grape growing industries.
