1889 $3 PR66 Cameo NGC. The three dollar gold piece was snuffed at last by the Act of September 26, 1890, decades after the end of its usefulness. Philadelphia had struck the last coins for the denomination a year earlier, including 129 proofs. While this figure was substantially larger than that of most other proof issues, it represented a steep fall from the 291 specimens coined in 1888.
While Garrett and Guth (2006) claim that "virtually the entire mintage has survived," attrition has claimed at least a few examples, and few remaining pieces have the exemplary eye appeal of this Premium Gem. The deeply reflective yellow-gold fields and crisply struck, lightly frosted devices create delightful contrast. A carefully preserved, elegant example that should appeal to even the most discerning numismatist. Census: 5 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
