1889<$3> MS66 PCGS. Long before the denomination was discontinued in 1889, the writing was on the wall for the three dollar gold piece. Not since 1878 had the mintage exceeded 6,000 pieces and token productions of 500 to 1,500 business strikes during this period was more the norm than the exception.
A mere 2,300 pieces were issued in this final year, few of which actually entered circulation. Several hundred Uncirculated survivors are available to today's collector thanks to hoarding at the time of issue, but the clear majority of these fail to surpass the MS63 grade level. Only an elite few boast the preservation of a Premium Gem. As with most other Mint State survivors, the surfaces on this outstanding representative display abundant radiance and mint frost without a trace of prooflike qualities. The strike is needle sharp in all areas and a pleasing reddish patina accents each side. Only the most insignificant luster grazes can be detected in the fields when examined under magnification. It has been more than a year since we have been able to offer an 1889 three dollar of this caliber. Population: 9 in 66, 2 finer (7/06).
