1889<$3> MS64 PCGS. During the final year of production for this denomination, the Philadelphia Mint produced 2,300 business strikes and 129 proof examples of this issue. Many of the business strikes were melted the following year, according to Walter Breen, who also noted that Virgil Brand purchased 50 such coins directly from the Mint at an unspecified later date. Today, only a few Choice or Gem Mint State examples remain for collectors to select. Although not a Gem example, this piece should prove to be appreciated by the connoisseur. It is much sharper than usual with full feather details on the obverse and a strong ribbon and bow on the reverse. The surfaces have satiny luster and rich yellow color. Population: 42 in 64, 35 finer (9/06).
