1889 $3 Gold PCGS MS65
1889 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS65. PCGS Pop: 24/11. An incredible array of luster supports bright gold and peach-toned highlights on this final year of issue. Nicely struck, too, with outstanding quality in the main devices. The $3 piece weighs 77.4 grains and is .900 Fine like the other U.S. gold coins, giving even those "right off the dies" pieces a tint of red color. The design is by James B. Longacre whose head on the obverse represents an Indian princess with hair tightly curling over the neck, head crowned with a circle of feathers, the band of which is inscribed LIBERTY. Only 2,429 pieces minted in 1889. Coinage after 1878 fell to low levels, said by one source from the Mint archives to have been made only to discourage speculators from buying up all the Proofs each year. Oddly, the low mintage circulation strike pieces were also bought up in quantity by the same speculators!
