Only 48 proofs were originally produced. Taglione estimates that fewer than 30 examples known, 5 of which have remained in the same Philadelphia estate since the turn of the century. He also states that the 1889 is "not more rare in absolute terms than the 1881 or 1885 Proofs." On the other hand, Akers says he has seen fewer 1889 proofs than 1881 or 1885 dated coins. Where does the truth lie? In our experience we would have to concur with David Akers as we have not offered an 1889 proof in at least eight years, and we have sold several of the other dates on multiple occasions.<BR>This coin is very deeply mirrored and boasts rich orange-gold color. The obverse devices show only marginal frost but on the reverse strong field-to-device contrast is noted. A lovely, problem-free example of this rarely encountered issue. Population: 5 in 64, 6 finer (10/03). </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed>No Prior Data Recorded </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
