1889 $10--Scratched--ANACS. Net PR55. The 1889 is a very rare issue in proof format. It is the rarest proof Liberty Eagle of the 1885-1907 era with an extant population (per Akers, 1980 and Breen, 1988) of approximately 12 coins. If this estimate is correct, then a decent number of proof 1889 Eagles in today's market may be impaired because NGC and PCGS combined have certified just five pieces in all grades. The present example is not without its problems, but, nonetheless, it represents an important bidding opportunity for the advanced gold specialist. Both sides are sharply struck with rich orange-gold color. The proof finish is readily evident, both sides being boldly cameoed. There are scattered hairlines in the fields, and a scratch overlays the bottom of Liberty's neck and enters the field on either side. A lintmark (as struck) is noted in the upper obverse field around star 8. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
