1888-S S$1 MS64 PCGS. With a business strike mint
1888-S<S$1> MS64 PCGS. With a business strike mintage of 657,000 pieces, the '88-S is one of the scarcer Morgan dollars of its era. Most Mint State specimens are in the MS60 to MS62 range. MS64 examples, such as that offered here, have an estimated population of only 3,000 to 5,000 pieces (Bowers, 1993). This coin has bright silvery surfaces that exude dazzling luster. The fields are partially prooflike, nicely setting off the motifs. The design elements reveal a sharper strike than average for the issue, which is usually unsatisfactorily impressed. The only real sign of weakness is in the hair above Liberty's ear. A few minute marks on Liberty's cheek limit the grade.
From The Milwaukee Shore Collection.
