1888-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1888-S double eagle can be easily located in grades ranging from About Uncirculated to Mint State 62. It becomes scarce in MS63 and rare in MS64 (Michael Fuljenz and Douglas Winter, Type Three Double Eagles, 1877-1907). Gems are virtually unknown. Indeed, PCGS and NGC have not, to date, seen any MS65 and finer coins.
Rich apricot-gold color dominates the obverse of the near-Gem presented in this lot. On the reverse, apricot-gold borders transition to yellow-gold hues in the center area. Glowing luster embraces both sides, and an attentive strike imparts excellent definition to all of the design elements. The reverse is impeccably preserved, while a few inoffensive obverse handling marks prevent the attainment of full Gem status. Population: 41 in 64, 0 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
