<B>1888-O S$1 MS64 PCGS.</B></I> Scar Face variety. VAM-1B. The 1888-O is a relatively common, even in Gem condition. The value of this coin is derived from the dramatic diagonal die break along Liberty's face. It is more fully described in the <I>Top 100 Varieties Handbook,</B></I> "A major die break runs from the rim between 'E' and 'P,' into the field, and down across Liberty's nose and cheek. ... The VAM 1B is the most dramatic die break in the Morgan dollar series. Rare in all grades." At the time of the publication of the book, the Scar Face was unknown in MS63 or better.
