This famous and desirable Morgan dollar is popular not only because of its listing as a Guide Book variety, but also because of the dramatic die doubling visible at the mouth, chin, nostrils, and profile. The Fey-Oxman Top 100 guide comments of this issue, "The Number One doubled die obverse in the Morgan dollar series. Only 1 BU known." This is the single highest graded of this variety at either service, and the only certified MS61 example (6/06). Fey and Oxman list this MS61 coin at the top of their Condition Census. Since that book was published in 1997, NGC has certified only one more Mint State coin, an MS60, which would place it second in the Condition Census. PCGS has certified no Mint State examples. While this coin has some light field chatter, reeding marks, and other abrasions consistent with the MS61 grade, there is absolutely no trace of rub on the highpoints, with unbroken, if subdued luster flowing throughout. Both sides are brilliant, with no trace of toning. The reverse die is slightly rotated counterclockwise. For a Morgan dollar specialist collecting the finest set of VAM keys or Guide Book varieties, this coin is simply irreplaceable, as well as unimprovable.
