1888 Liberty Seated 50C NGC MS67
1888 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded MS67. A sharply struck Gem that has radiant snow white originality. Desirable with this exact strike, even though we need to point out some examples often show signs of weakness in the head and on the stars, this coin is a brilliant exception to that rule. It has sharpness everywhere. Its rarity is captured also in the low mintage figure: 12,000 business strikes were all that were produced.

Why so few made? There was an great expansion of silver coinage in the mid-1870s, from 1873 to 1877 in fact. Then, toward the latter part of 1877 vast numbers of previously exported silver coins began returning to the United States, principally from Central America and Canada. Tens of millions of coins flooded into the bank tills. This vast inrush continued well into 1880 with major consequences to the balance of supply and demand for circulating change. In reaction, the Treasury ordered the suspension of minor silver coinage in early 1878 and did not resume it for some years because of the accumulation in the Treasury. At the same time, the Mints were ordered to concentrate all possible effort to striking millions of silver dollars each year, pursuant to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878.
