1888 Chicago vs. Philadelphia National League Program. The Cubs and the Phillies were known as the White Stockings and the Quakers when a fan neatly scored a May 21, 1888 match between the two Victorian era clubs at Chicago's West Side Park. Batting clean-up for the home team was 3,000 Hit Club founder Adrian "Cap" Anson, though his remarkable talents couldn't salvage a win this day over Harry Wright's visiting squad. The sixteen-page program offers no shortage of delightful imagery and text, with advertising for everything from bicycles with tremendous front wheels to mysterious magnetic belts to cure common ailments. A small portrait of Chicago outfielder Robert Pettit appears on the cover below an early baseball scene. The center scorecard is slightly loose but still affixed to the binding, with light edge and corner wear the only other condition issues worth mentioning. A remarkable find in any condition, a true gem in this terrific shape.
