1888<$5> PR64 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint produced 18,296 business strike and 95 proof Half Eagles in 1888. Survivors of the latter delivery are understandably rare (Breen reports perhaps 30-35 pieces), but they are more easily obtainable than Mint State representatives. A dazzling coin, both sides are awash in deep yellow-gold color with subtle cameo contrast between the fields and devices, even though this is not mentioned on the PCGS plastic holder. The details over the highpoints of the coronet and the eagle are sharp and well defined. Some milky patina has collected in the fields and protected areas, and a number of scattered hairlines are in the fields. Still, an extraordinary opportunity to own one of the finest known specimens. Population: 13 in 64, 3 finer (3/05).
