1888<$3> PR67 Cameo NGC. The 1888 three dollar is well known as the most frequently encountered date in the series in proof format. Probably 150-175 coins are known today out of the original mintage of 291 proofs. This date is also well known for the so-called "halo effect" seen in the obverse fields. This is a result of porosity in the die and is not a defect, as has sometimes been claimed in the past. All legitimate proofs show a large patch of die rust on the neck of Liberty, and it appears that heavy die polishing has eliminated much of the BL of the designer's initials while the J remains intact. Breen's assertion that some proofs show doubling on UNITED remains unverified, and it appears he was confused with business strikes of this date. As the insert implies, this is a magnificent proof striking. The fields show unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity and the devices are noticeably frosted with the resultant cameo contrast on each side. Like so many proof gold coins from this decade, close examination reveals an orange-peel surface in the fields. A sparkling, near-perfect cameo proof three dollar and the finest certified by both NGC and PCGS (11/05).
From The Clausen Family Collection.
