<B>1888<$3> PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> This coin is very likely the finest known 1888 Proof to survive which shows the elusive Deep Cameo contrast. It is the only example graded this high by PCGS and NGC hasn't graded any in their Ultra Cameo designation of this date. In fact, PCGS has graded two examples of this issue that show the full Deep Cameo contrast, this coin and another as PR65. The color can best be described as rich orange-gold, as vibrant as any seen on any proof gold coin. Examination of the surfaces finds the expected orange-peel fields in abundance. This particular coin is identifiable by a minute lintmark just left of the lower knob on the 3, and by a tiny tick in the field left of the L in LIBERTY. There is diagnostic minor die rust present on the upper portion of Liberty's neck, and this is present on all Proof Three dollar gold pieces issued in 1888. For the specialist, obtaining this coin would represent a wonderful opportunity. This coin is accompanied by the following letter from Scott Travers, who is similarly taken with the ample charms of this regal Gem proof.<BR>"It is by far the most flawless, awe-inspiring, and aesthetically appealing three dollar gold piece I have ever seen or handled in my career. I can't imagine any other coin of this type being as spectacular. Dramatic cameo contrast between the golden-pond-like fields and deeply frosted devices combine to make this example particularly alluring."
