<B>1888 $3 PR65 Cameo NGC.</B></I> The last few years of production for three dollar gold coins saw increased mintage of proofs and decreased mintage of business strikes. In 1888, for example, the Mint coined 5,000 business strikes and 291 proofs, the latter a record for the series. Perhaps as many as 100 of these proofs survive today in a wide range of grades. This total is sufficient that most collectors who desire an example can obtain one, although usually not in the quality presented here. This piece has exceptional contrast with deeply mirrored fields and lustrous devices. The surfaces are fully brilliant with attractive yellow-gold color.
