1888 $3 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. A couple of tiny contact marks and a light scuff in the field to left of the 3 on reverse account for the less-than-Gem grade, but this piece retains its intense mirrored brilliance and exhibits the so-desirable orange-peel fields. Its real appeal, however, is not appreciated by close examination but rather in the delight of viewing it when held at a slight distance from the eyes, at an angle, which shows off the dramatic eye appeal of the Ultra Cameo, frosted contrast. The mintage was 291 coins, the largest of the proof mintages of this denomination. Most of these pieces no longer exist, and of those that are still extant most are not as choice as this example. An attractive proof type coin. Curiously, Garrett and Guth comment that, "The Smithsonian has one Proof, a PF-64 cameo example, obtained in the year of issue." Evidently even in 1888 these did not come "perfect"!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
