<B>1888 $3 PR64 Cameo NGC.</B></I> The proof mintage of this date was 291 coins, the highest of any date in the three dollar gold series. It seems that the number of survivors is consistent with such a mintage, as at least 100 of these coins still exist today. However, proofs are not as plentiful as once thought. Many prooflike coins exist and these have routinely been offered in auctions as proofs, although the grading services have virtually eliminated such events in today's numismatic marketplace. This example, with splendid cameo contrast and deep mirrored fields, is similar to the single coin held by the Smithsonian Institution, obtained directly from the Mint yet no finer in quality.
