1888<$3> MS66 PCGS. A new book was published earlier this year, and a copy belongs on the shelf of any collector or numismatist who has even a passing interest in gold coinage. Every circulating gold coinage issue, every proof gold piece, each pattern issue, and every early commemorative gold coin has a paragraph devoted to it. The Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933 was penned by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. To provide an idea of the text, the following is the entry for this 1888 three dollar piece:

"The 1888 $3 gold piece is one of the most common dates in the series, despite a mintage that ranks among the lowest. Only 1854, 1874, and 1878 issues are more common. Mint State examples are plentiful and usually appear in the MS-63 to MS-65 range. MS-66 examples become quite scarce, and this is one of only a dozen dates that can be found in MS-67 or better. Richard Jewell owned one of the two PCGS MS67 coins, and when his collection was sold in 2005, his 1888 specimen realized $66,700 after active bidding. This date sometimes comes weakly struck, and the luster ranges from prooflike to frosty and satiny. The Smithsonian has two examples, the finest of which is an MS-64."

This example is an impeccable Gem with frosty luster and amazing eye appeal. Both sides have virtually full design definition although the hair just below LIBERTY is a little weak. The surfaces have brilliant and frosty luster with bright yellow surfaces and deeper honey-gold accents. A few scattered surface marks are noted on each side. Population: 26 in 66, 2 finer (7/06).
