1888 $3 MS65 PCGS. After 1878, the three dollar denomination was limited to token mintages, none of which exceeded 6,000 pieces. The penultimate issue in the relatively short but highly demanding series, the 1888 had a production of only 5,000 pieces. Some of these were set aside by shrewd numismatists of the day, but the third party populations are likely inflated by resubmissions, and Gems appear at auction only a few times per year. This assertively struck example displays peach and lime-gold colors, and the lustrous surfaces are carefully preserved. The obverse is particularly smooth. UNITED is nicely die doubled, a diagnostic for business strikes of the date.

Coin Engraver: James B.
