1888 $3 MS65 NGC. The few active collectors of gold coins in the late 1880s must have had quite a heyday, as the writing had been on the wall for several years that the three dollar gold pieces would go the way of the woolly mammoth. After 1879 the yearly mintages never again exceeded 7,000 pieces, yet many of the later pieces were saved for posterity. According to Bowers' The United States $3 Gold Pieces 1854-1889 (2005), New York City-based coin dealer J.W. Scott apparently bought several hundred examples of the 1888 issue directly from the Mint.
The present example, like most of its brethren, shows an "aura" of reflectivity around the central portrait. Excellent luster and pretty apricot-gold surfaces complete the attractive package. The reverse die is rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. Census: 36 in 65, 13 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
