1888 $3 MS65 NGC. The 1888 has long been a popular target for hoarders, because of the tiny mintage of 5,000 pieces. The 1888 is indeed a better date, but a portion of the mintage was set aside, presumably by a few Philadelphia-area dealers. MS62 to MS64 examples are always available for a price, but the issue is undeniably rare as a Gem. This lustrous representative has an exemplary reverse, while the obverse has only faint marks. The strike is intricate except for minor softness on the wreath knot, as it is opposite the high relief plumes. Light die doubling on Liberty's eye and mouth, and more apparent die doubling on UNITED, are diagnostic for the business strike issue. Census: 36 in 65, 13 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
