1888<$3> MS64 PCGS. Even though only 5,000 pieces were struck of the 1888 three dollar, apparently there was a low attrition rate. It is estimated that today between 350 and 450 Uncirculated coins may still be extant, which makes this an excellent choice for type purposes. It is somewhat surprising that there are this many pieces available, as Henry Chapman made the comment: "Of the later years, large numbers were remelted at the Philadelphia Mint." Apparently this date was hoarded, which would account for the low mintage, melting, and high availability. Again, Henry Chapman sold 13 examples of the 1888 three dollar in his 1912 sale of the George H. Earle Collection.
This is a lovely, high grade type coin. The surfaces are bright yellow-gold and exude the same swirling mint frost that is characteristic of another "common date" in the three dollar series, the 1878. The only marks of note are a couple of shallow scrapes in the right obverse field and below OF.
