1888 $20 MS64 NGC.
1888 $20 MS64 NGC.<p>After seven years of minuscule mintage figures, production of Double Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint increased dramatically in 1888. This is a fairly common issue in MS60-62 condition. It becomes very scarce in MS63 and very rare in any grade above that. There appears to have been a small hoard of Gem examples at one time. The three or four high grade 1888 Double Eagles we have seen all had a similar overall "look." This uncleaned, orange-gold example has a much stronger strike than most pieces we have encountered. The star centrils are fully defined and almost all the hair is complete at the top of Liberty's head as well as on the bun. A "Gem Brilliant Uncirculated" sold for $16,100 in the Dallas Bank Collection, and a PCGS MS64 realized $13,640 in the Kingswood 6/98 sale. There were a pair of NGC MS65s on the market four or five years ago and at least one of them sold for more than $20,000. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
