<B>1888 $10 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> Despite its recorded mintage of 72 pieces (the <I>Guide Book figure of 75 appears to be in error,</B></I> the 1888 eagle is an elusive gold coin as a proof. The current combined population data at NGC and PCGS show 13 proofs in all grades at NGC, with eight proof pieces at PCGS. The present PR65 Deep Cameo coin is the <I>single finest example certified at either service.</B></I> NGC has graded no coins finer than PR64 (11/06). As an added indication of the rarity of this coin, since the mintage of the first With Motto proofs in 1866, only four other issues through the 1880s--1871, 1874, 1877, and 1878--show a total NGC/PCGS population of one coin in PR65, PR65 Cameo, and PR65 Deep/Ultra Cameo with none finer, making this is the <I>only 1880s issue with a combined NGC/PCGS population of one coin in PR65 between both services, with none finer.</B></I><BR> Proofs from 1888 have a date that is low in the field and slants minutely up to the right. The left bottom serif of the 1 is over the left half of a dentil. The proof reverse, which was shared with the 1887 eagles, shows "four stripes thin, feathers attenuated below second," according to Walter Breen's proof <I>Encyclopedia.</B></I> Breen comments that the 1888 eagle is the "rarest denomination of the year, seldom offered, probably between 20 and 30 survivors at most, possibly fewer."<BR> The present example offers bold contrast between the deeply frosted devices and the well-mirrored fields as its chief hallmark. The fields show the orange-peel texture frequently seen on gold proofs from this era. The sharp strike succeeds in fully delineating all of the star centrils, and the individual beads in Liberty's hair cord are fully articulated. On the reverse, there is no apparent weakness on any of the eagle's feathers, which are distinct and fully struck, and full detail appears present as well in the eagle's claws and the horizontal stripes in the shield.
