1887-S$1> MS65 PCGS. Highly lustrous, brilliant, and untoned with prooflike tendencies, although not noted as such on the old-style PCGS green-label holder. At one time the 1887-S was considered a major rarity: an 1898 auction record exists at $4.10, a price that then was more than double the cost of a proof 1895 Morgan dollar. Liberty's cheek and neck are free of major marks, and examination under magnification reveals only a scratch well hidden in the hair above Liberty's ear, along with a couple of bagmarks in the reverse right field. Well struck, and perhaps a candidate for a higher grade by today's standards. PCGS has graded only 21 coins higher than the present specimen. A pleasing and collectible coin.
