1887-S<$20> MS63 PCGS. This issue had a rather limited mintage of 283,000 coins, and it is the sole representative among business strike double eagles for the year. Only proofs were coined in Philadelphia, the Carson City Mint was dormant, and the New Orleans Mint was exclusively a producer of silver dollars during the year. Nearly all of the mintage entered circulation or was exported, and few Mint State pieces are known. The Smithsonian Institution, for example, has just one coin that grades AU50. Those pieces that have returned from overseas holdings are usually heavily bagmarked, and grade MS60 or MS61 at best. This example, with sharp design details and brilliant yellow-gold surfaces, is one of the finest available examples. The surfaces are lightly abraded but there are no noticeable bagmarks. Both sides have satiny luster with traces of pinkish toning. Population: 45 in 63, 4 finer (7/06).
